bJ Approved!

I’ve been meaning to write about some other cool websites you may want to peruse besides boobaJONES.com. I will be doing this sporadically, so if you see anything that warrants being included in future posts, e-mail (bJ@boobaJONES.com) them to me and I will check them out.

SPORTS

#1. “The Sports Guy” Bill Simmons is far and away the best sports columnist around for one simple reason - he writes from the fan’s perspective. He is well-known for his great articles as well as his ever growing podcast. He has the unique ability of being able to mesh sports, pop culture, and current events into a perfect combination for all reader’s to enjoy. His podcast also shines the light on various personalities, ranging from: sports people, celebrities, authors, comedians, and even his own friends. Recently he wrote a terrific piece on the state of NBA Officiating that definitely brought much needed discussion on the topic by many in the media as well as to the average fan. He has already authored an awesome book on the Red Sox winning their first world series in 86 years and has his sophomore project, about the history of the NBA, coming out later this year.

#2. I came across this blog because of Bill Simmons actually. A reader had e-mailed him the link to a blog started by the “12th man” on the Ohio State men’s basketball team, Mark “The Shark” Titus. He gives some hilarious insight into the world of (bench-warming) college basketball as well as his thoughts on country music, wrestling, and his quest to being named the whitest player on his team. Take a gander and maybe you will become a follower in the Trillion Man March.

#3. Mark Cuban is largely known for being the billionaire owner of the NBA’s Dallas Mavericks, as well as a very technology savvy individual who also owns HDNet and 2929 Entertainment, among numerous other entities. He maintains a personal blog in which he delves into the climate in sports, the financial world, and some personal thoughts. Very interesting and informative.

COMEDY

It MUST start with the man who has coined The Rant - of course I am talking about Adam “Aceman” Carolla. He of the Love Line and Man Show fame began recording a podcast less than 5 months ago and has already ascended to the #1 comedy podcast on iTunes. He has a show 5 days a week, usually with a guest. The topic of conversation never has any specific agenda, and can start with talk about cars and somehow lead to a discussion on sexual preferences and end with a rant about the horrible driving conditions we have become accustomed to. Since the podcast is being run by Adam and his friend The Weez, nothing is out of bounds and there is definitely explicit language. But after hours of uncontrollable laughter, I can only hope to see it continue to grow.

WRITING

Malcolm Gladwell is an outstanding writer who has received critical acclaim for his 3 books (Blink, The Tipping Point, Outliers) and also does some great freelance work for the New Yorker from time to time. Funny enough, Bill Simmons introduced me to him as well, and actually had a very thought-provoking e-mail correspondence with each other recently. He has a special and engrossing way of writing that is unlike any other author I have read. The topics vary in regards to the subject, but somehow, we always is able to convey a well thought and researched story to prove his point. Unreal stuff.

MUSIC

The Constant is a powerpop group from New York, lead by singer/songwriter/guitarist Steven Baggs, who’s a voice right out of the late ‘90’s with his pain vocals and rocking tight sound. More precisely, he sounds like Eagle Eye Cherry and has the growl of Dave Grohl, but don’t hold it against him. Blending the best ingredients off of pop’s musical spice rack, Steven writes songs about past relationships and life experiences which serve up an astringent view of love, loss and everything in between. Each song is filled with sharpened hooks toughened by innovative guitar riffs and harmonious vocals that will settle into your head and stay there.
